Reviewer Comments: Contemporary light vampire novels are Michele Bardsley’s bailiwick. Her latest book is just one of the many books she has written that answer the question of what would happen if a rogue vampire attacked a town and several parents were changed overnight. Just how would the town and the supernatural community react and how would life change.
In her latest installment in the Broken Heart series, Phoebe Allen finds out just how much trouble a one-night stand can be when you are a vampire and the man you slept with is a half-demon. Now they are mated together for a century and Phoebe must live with the consequences.
Connor Ballard is half fairy and half demon. He didn’t mean to lie to Phoebe, but he needs her unique abilities to help him stop his awful stepmother, Lilith, who is full demon. Connor wants to do the right thing and he honestly believes that mating with Phoebe will help him to prevent a larger disaster.
Together, Phoebe and Connor must find a way to make things right while dealing with their absolute attraction to each other. Complicating matters are Connor’s sister and Phoebe’s son whom they both need to take care of. Family comes first, but without the talisman to kill Lilith, they don’t have a hope of succeeding.
Ms. Bardsley tells her tales with irreverence and humor. She never forgets that her characters are people with all the different facets of personality. The story of Connor and Phoebe is told with her typical tongue-in-cheek attitude. She doesn’t make excuses for her characters but lets them stand as they are flaws and all. I think this makes her characters even more real for her readers. We understand what Phoebe is feeling and we hope that for once a decision she makes will turn out to be the right one and that she will gain some happiness.
For lovers of this series, many of the previous characters make an appearance as they help Connor and Phoebe to defeat Lilith and keep Broken Heart safe. It is nice to catch up with favorite characters such as Patsy and Gabriel, but you don’t have to have read the other books to appreciate this one. Ms. Bardsley gives enough background information to set the stage for new readers without boring those of us familiar with Broken Heart.
